The Dangers of Spring for Our Pets

With the arrival of spring and the increase in temperature, a time of danger begins for our pets that require a series of precautions to be able.

FLEAS AND TICKETS

Both fleas and ticks need certain conditions favorable environmental conditions for its appearance. The period of greatest incidence covers from spring until the arrival of winter, coinciding with the increase in temperatures. In warm areas, caution must be maintained throughout the year.

Normally, the increase in temperature coincides with the beginning of spring and in the month of March approximately we have to start to protect our dogs from these parasites since they can cause serious diseases. See article Fleas and Ticks

In the market there are pipettes and sprays that will protect our dog against these threats and that we can consult at the veterinarian.

We also advise to check more frequently the coat of the dog during this time especially if has been in areas with higher incidence. In the presence of any of these parasites we have several ways of acting. See articles How to eliminate ticks and How to eliminate fleas

LA LEISHMANIOSIS

Leishmaniasis is caused by a small parasite transmitted by the bite of a mosquito-like insect that is very difficult to detect.

of greater danger, once again, coincides with the increase in temperature and that is why we have to protect our dog from the beginning of spring. In the market there are pipettes, collars and sprays destined to scare the mosquito to try to reduce the probability of the bite. See article Leishmaniasis

Since 2012 there is a vaccine on the market against leishmaniasis that prevents dogs against the disease that transmits the parasite. It should be noted, however, that some veterinarians indicate that their application should not yet be recommended for all types of dogs since, in many cases, the side effects are unknown. As we always tell you, consulting with the veterinarian is the best option to leave doubts. See Vaccine against Leishmaniasis

THE PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLAR

It is a caterpillar that nests at the top of the pines forming cotton balls very easy to detect. With the increase of the temperature the processionary caterpillar lowers the pines forming a row towards an earthy place where it will remain buried. It is in this process when we have to be more cautious during walks with our dogs and avoid walking through areas of pine.

In hot weather we must closely monitor the dogs during walks as they form rows on the ground they tend to call them a lot of attention and try to explore them with their mouths, which can cause serious dangers, among them suffocation. Above all we recommend paying more attention during walks and be very attentive because if the dog comes in contact with the caterpillar, especially if it is through the mouth, you should take it urgently to the vet.
